Peripheral Nerve Stimulator Q&A

What is a Peripheral Nerve Stimulator?

Peripheral nerve stimulation involves surgery that places a small electrical device next to one of the peripheral nerves. The device delivers rapid electrical pulses to the nerve or nerves using one or several electrodes.

What are the Benefits?

Research has demonstrated that peripheral nerve stimulation may be used effectively in the management of acute as well as chronic pain. Common musculoskeletal indications include chronic shoulder pain and ongoing knee pain, amongst other conditions.

How Does it Work?

The system involves the placement of a small lead wire. Ultrasound imaging is used to guide placement of the lead to target a peripheral nerve. The lead wire is connected to a wearable matchbox-sized stimulator. After the lead is connected to the stimulator, the patient is able to adjust stimulation and customize its output remotely using a small Bluetooth enabled controller.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

The stimulation can provide significant pain relief and this relief endures from 60 day to several years.

Is a Peripheral Nerve Stimulator Right for Me?

If you have not experienced sufficient pain relief with treatments such as acetaminophen (e.g. Tylenol) and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to reduce the inflammation, such as aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen, this treatment may be helpful for pain relief and to increase mobility or movement.
